Flannel blankets are a popular favourite, particularly when the temperature gets colder. However, flannel is very delicate and if it is not treated will eventually appear faded, worn and lose its original softness. Here are some suggestions to ensure you clean flannel bedding to preserve the quality for the longest time possible.
Rinse in Warm Water
Always clean your flannel sheets in cool or warm water. Do not wash your flannel in hot water. The hot water could result in the fabric shrinking. This could cause fraying and pilling in the fabric’s delicate weave which, in turn, will alter its softness and make it an uncomfortable blanket. Additionally, hot water can result in the fabric fading quicker in time. Cool or warm water is gentler on the fabric.
Don’t forget to separate your hues.
Use Mild Detergent
Use a gentle detergent clean your flannel bedding. The harsh detergents that contain enzymes bleach, and other additives can cause your flannel blanket’s colour to fade fast.
Use gentle friction
The most important thing that your flannel blanket requires is a lot of friction. A lot of agitation on the fabric can cause an enormous amount of strain on the fabric and may result in pilling. A gentle cycle puts less pressure on the fabric and causes less strain on the blanket.
Avoid Liquid Fabric Softener
Don’t use liquid fabric Softener on your flannel blanket. Liquid fabric softeners will coat the fibres of the blanket, creating a thin film, which causes the blanket to stiffen with time.
Drying
If you choose to air dry the flannel using a dryer, make sure you select the lowest setting and allow them to dry in a tumbler. As it takes longer to dry and will make your flannel high-end for a longer period. Make sure you remove your blankets from the dryer as soon as they are dry to prevent wrinkles. Make sure to remove any lint from machines after you wash your blankets. Flannel blankets tend to shed lots, which means there’s a lot of dust.
Another alternative is to let towels air dry. Simply remove them from the washer, shake the excess water out and hang them up on the drying rack or clothesline.
If hand washing is required…
The same procedure is followed but, I’d advise soaking the flannel in mild soap for a couple of hours or overnight before washing.
