Part 1

Cutting Out Your Fabric Pieces

  1. Choose the right fabric. There are a variety of materials that can be used to make the perfect hoodie. It is crucial to pick the right fabric. It is possible to choose either a lightweight or heavy fabric based on how warm you’d like the hoodie to feel.

Be sure to purchase more material than you’ll need. Two yards should be sufficient to make a large hoodie.

  • Make use of an old sweatshirt with a hood to cut out the body pieces. There is no need for any pattern to design the sweatshirt. You can take an old sweatshirt that has a hood to use as a reference. Place your sweatshirt with a hood on top of the doubled-up fabric. After that, fold the arms and the hood in such a way that you only have just the body in draw an outline. Then, trace around the body of the hoodie approximately one” (2.5 centimeters) to the edge, to create the seam allowance.

Select an old sweatshirt with a hood identical to the one you’re planning to make. This will make sure that you are getting the correct dimensions.

If you have trouble to get around the arms and hood then you could also make use of a t-shirt for guide. But you’ll need the sweatshirt to serve as a reference for the other components that make up the hoodie.

You can trace armpits of the sweatshirt in order to find the pieces of the arm. Fold one of the arms from your sweatshirt. Then, align the top of the sleeve. This will be in line with the folded edge of your fabric, and line up the armpit region of the sleeve. Then, line up the other side of the fabric. Utilize your chalk to draw approximately 1″ (2.5 centimeters) from the lower part of the sleeve, and the wrist region to ensure sufficient seam allowance. Cut according to the chalk lines.

Be sure to not cut across the fold edge. Keep this folded.

Repeat the same process to make the second sleeves.

  • Follow the contours of the hood and make the hood pieces. Then, fold the fabric once more to create four layers. Then, put the hood in place in a way it’s edges meet and the hood is placed on its side. Place the hood portion of your sweatshirt on top the fabric stack however, do not fret about how to line it up by folding it. Draw the outline of the hood on the fabric’s top layer using chalk. Then, cut through the four layers using the chalk lines.
  • Make two strips to make wristbands. Be sure your fabric has been folded into two layers. To make the wristbands take one of your sleeves and then align the edges with folded fabric. After that, trace the edges that are on the ends (wrist region) of the sleeves. The lines should be extended towards the top of the sleeve to ensure that the length will be approximately 4 inches (10 centimeters) large. Cut across the edges to make two pieces of wrist.

Wristbands are not required. If you’d prefer to take them off, you are able to bypass this step and simply tie the sleeves’ ends instead.

  • Create a long strip to form the bottom part that will be the bottom of your sweatshirt. Fold the fabric in two layers. Cut out four” (10cm) large strip of fabric which is exactly the same size as the length of your bottom body parts. To determine this number take a measurement of from the top of the body parts and then multiply the measurement.

For instance, if the top of your piece has a width of twenty” (51 cm), then you will need to cut out a strip that is 40″ (102 cm) long.

The bottom band is not required. If you’d prefer to remove it then do this and simply hem the top of your sweatshirt.

  • Make your pocket pieces. The pocket appears like an oval with curves on the two corners at the top. The pocket can be placed on a sweatshirt that you already have to aid in achieving the right shape, or simply draw the shape on your own. You can design the pocket as big or as small as you want.

The pocket is an option too. If you do not want an actual pocket, do not bother with this step.

Part 2

Sewing Your Hoodie Pieces

  1. Pin the opposite side of the body piece. The edges should be lined up on your body piece in a way that the sides on the right side are in front of each other. Then put pins on the sides as well as the above the shoulders. Keep the neck, armpit and lower body areas free. Sew the pins about 1/2 ” (1.3 millimeters) away from the edges. The pins should be removed as you move.
  • Sew both the sides of your sleeves. Then, grab one of the pieces from your sleeve and line up the long edges so that the sides on the right side are facing one another. Then, pin along the edge leaving the armpit and wrists unfinished. Sew the edge of the pin approximately 1/2 ” (1.3 centimeters) from the edges of your fabric.

Repeat the process for the second sleeve.

Be sure to remove the pins when you are done.

  • Sew and pin the hood’s lining and the outer pieces of the hood. Choose two pieces of your hood and sew the curved edges to each other. Keep the top and front sides of your hood free. Be sure that the right and left sides of the fabric have been aligned. Repeat the procedure with the remaining two pieces. Sew around 1/2 ” (1.3 millimeters) from the edges of the fabric.
  • Attach the pieces for the hood. After that, flip one piece upside down and slide it into the other piece. The outer edges of the pieces of the hood (the pieces that go over your head) and then pin them to each other. Don’t worry about pins along the lower edge of the pieces. After that, you can sew approximately 1/2 ” (1.3 millimeters) from the edge of your fabric, where you’ve put the pins.

Take off the pins as you proceed.

After sewing parts of your hood then turn the piece around so that the side of the fabric is visible. The seams must be concealed.

  • Join the short ends of the wrist and the bottom band pieces. Next , you must join those short ends of your wrist pieces and the bottom band. The short edges should be lined up of of the pieces in a way that the right edges are facing one another. Then, you can sew the pieces together about 1/2 ” (1.3 centimeters) away from the edges.

When you’ve finished stitching the shorter edges of the wrist piece and the bottom band after which you are able to flip them over to reveal the other side.

  • Hem pockets. The straight edge of your pocket ought to be straightforward, but you may need to make a cut in the center of the curving edges in order to make it more straightforward to sew them. Fold approximately 1/2 ” (1.3 centimeters) from the material to cover each edge of your pocket. The opposite edges should be aligned with each others and the raw edge is to be covered. Pins are used to keep the edges. After that, you can sew the edges, and take off any pins you find as you proceed.

If you’ve decided to not take your pocket You can do this without a second thought.

Part 3

Assembling Your Hoodie

  1. Sew and pin your arm pieces to your body piece. Place the edges of your arms with armholes of your body piece to ensure that the sides of the pieces face each other. Place the pieces on top of each other and sew them along the edges, about 1/2 ” (1.3 millimeters) away from the edges.

You can remove the pins as move.

Sewing around arm openings can be a bit tricky. Begin at the top shoulder, and sew to the lower part of the opening. After that, you’ll start at the shoulder that is opposite of the armhole. Work backwards to sew the opposite side.

  • attach the hood piece onto your body part. After that, you’ll need to join the hood piece with the piece of body. For connecting the two pieces, you need to line up the lower edges of your hood to the neckline, making sure it is that raw edges on the two pieces are aligned and the sides on the right are aligned. The pieces should be pinched together, and sew the edges, about 1/2 ” (1.3 centimeters) away from raw edges.

Be sure that the hood piece is all the way to the neckline. You might need to wrap the piece slightly in order to accomplish this. To ensure that the hood fits uniform, you can pin the edges in a way that the front and back that make up the hood have been aligned on the body’s front piece.

  • Sew and pin the pocket to the body piece’s front. For the pocket to be joined to the body piece, sew it onto it’s front in order it is in a centered position. Be sure that you turn the piece right-side out, and that the left side of the pocket facing out too. The flat edges should be pins of the pocket. Leave the edges that curve not pinned. Attach your pocket onto the body piece’s front by sewing along the pin edges.

Make sure you stitch the pocket onto the top of the fabric.

  • Place the edge of your wrist pieces that is raw to their ends on the sleeves. To join these wrist pieces onto the edges of the sleeves Fold your wrists in half widthwise in such a way that the wrong side are facing one another and all the edges of raw are aligned. Then, sew their raw edges wrist pieces to sides of the sleeves. sew approximately 1/2 ” (1.3 centimeters) away from their edges.

Make sure to remove the pins before you stitch.

  • The bottom band is attached to the sweatshirt’s bottom. The bottom piece of fabric should be folded in width to ensure that the wrong sides face each other, and those raw edges are aligned. Then, you can pin the bottom bands to the top of the piece in order it is aligned. Sew approximately 1/2 ” (1.3 millimeters) away from to the edge.

Part 4

Adding a Zipper

  1. Cut off the center in the center of the jacket. It isn’t necessary to add a zipper however, you may choose to add one if you’d would like. Find a zipper sufficient to completely cover the body of the sweatshirt. Be sure you cut a straight and smooth line.

Zippers are available in various sizes, so you will be able to locate an appropriate zipper proper size to fit your sweatshirt. If you are unable to locate a zipper that is the exact dimensions, choose one that is closest to the sweatshirt but is not more than the sweatshirt.

If you’ve added pockets, you are able to cut through it. You’ll be sewing the zipper on either side as well as creating two pockets through the process.

  • The zipper should be pinned to the right side of the material. Then, take the zipper out of its zip and then pin it to the fabric. Be sure that the edges of your fabric zipper are aligned with the raw edges of the body piece. Make sure to do this for both the sides of your opening on the body piece.
  • Secure the zipper. Make a straight stitch approximately 1/2 ” (1.3 centimeters) away from the edges of the zipper and the body piece. Take the pins off as you proceed.

Once you have finished attaching the zipper the hoodie is at hand to wear. Check it out and check out the look!
